How To Write A Truly Grateful Thank You Card

Sometimes all the rushing around at Christmas and New Year can mean thank you card writing gets forgotten about, but it's still an important act that lets people know you appreciate the effort they made when choosing a gift for you.

If you’re yet to write any thank you cards for those lovely Christmas presents you received a few weeks ago, now is the time! It’s best to send them as soon as possible after receiving a gift, but don’t leave it any more than a month at the latest.

If you need some inspiration to help you get started, we’ve put together some helpful tips to get you on track. And if you still need some thank you cards to write in, why not head over to our shop?

1. Let’s start with the basics: a greeting!

It might seem obvious, but a thank you card should always be personal. This includes addressing the recipient by name, but also how you greet them.

Start your card with a greeting that suits your relationship with the recipient. “Hi Lisa!” will work well for close friends, but stick to “Dear Mr and Mrs Lidbury,” if you need to be more formal.

2. Make it personal and be specific!

Don’t just write “Thank you for the lovely present.” It’ll look like you’re churning out a big pile of these.

Go into specific details to show how much you appreciate their gift. You could mention how or where you’ll use it, or simply something in particular that you like about it such as the colour or material. This attention to detail can really make a difference.

3. Show your care by looking forward!

A thank you card is more than just a simple note to say thank you, it shows you care about the person receiving it.

If you know when you’ll be seeing them next, mention how much you look forward to seeing them then. If not, why not suggest meeting up soon? Or keep it simple and say you look forward to seeing them again in future.

4. Thank them once more for good measure!

The ‘Thank you!” is a key part of any thank you note after all, so make sure to emphasise it!

Before you sign off your card, add another thank you to reinforce how grateful you are. It could be a simple “Thanks again!” Or something more detailed, but it’ll mean a lot either way.

5. Last of all, sign your name!

You’ve written out everything you need to in your thank you card, so now it’s time to sign it off!

Much like your chosen greeting, the style you chose to sign off your card with will suit your recipient and your relationship with them. “Best wishes,” or “Lots of love!” - you’ll have to decide what works best.

And there you have it! So now that you know what to put in a thank you card, all that’s left is to write it down.
