How To Write A Genuinely Personal Message In Your Valentines Day Card

So you’ve got the flowers, the chocolates, the candles are lit - all that’s left is the card. But how do you write a message that says more and means more than just “Happy Valentines Day”?

Sometimes you want to write something romantic or meaningful, but you don't know where to start. If you’re still scratching your head, don’t worry! We’ve put together some foolproof tips that will help you write an original, personal Valentines Day message that comes from the heart!

1. Look at the special moments

This could be from the past or things that are yet to come that you look forward to. Sharing a treasured memory is a great way to show your partner how much you care.

“I’ll always remember…” It could be a romantic moment where your partner swept you off your feet, or a time they made you laugh so much your drink came out of your nose - go with a mood that suits you and your partner. Pick the memory, and if you can, explain why it means so much to you.

Alternatively, try looking forward to the future. If you’ve got something coming up that you can’t wait for - a date night, a holiday together, even a wedding - mention that instead. If you don’t want to get too specific, simply express how you look forward to your future together.

2. Show they’re important to you

Everyone wants to be valued, especially by their partner. Valentines Day is a great time to express just how grateful you are to be with them. Think about the things that make you feel lucky to have them in your life - the little things and the big things!

You could pick something you’re grateful for; be it a simple day to day thing like always remembering to take the bins out, or more emotional, like the way they always know how to make you laugh even when you've had a bad day.

If you can pinpoint something specific about them that you really value, express it! It will mean so much, particularly if it is a smaller detail they didn’t expect you to notice.

3. Support them

As well as being grateful for the things they do to be there for you, make sure they know you’re there to support them too. Much like the above points, if there’s something specific you can focus on it’s a great way to make your Valentines Day message extra personal.

Maybe there’s something coming up in your partner’s life, such as a job interview you can help them practice for, or perhaps they’re having a tough time with something personal and they need a hand to hold. Let them know you’re there to pick them up if things get hard, and to celebrate with them when things go well. You’re a team after all, and you’ll take on whatever comes your way together.

4. Make them laugh

You’ll know your partner best, and maybe you don’t make a big deal of Valentines Day. Perhaps it’s something you prefer to keep a bit more lighthearted. You can still write a Valentines Day message that feels thoughtful and personal without getting too emotional!

Think about the things that make your partner laugh, the inside jokes you share. Find a way to incorporate your personal running gags into your message - be it the nicknames you have for each other, silly puns, or things you like to quote. Find a way to make them smile, or even better, crack them up!

5. The obvious bit!

A Valentines Day message shouldn’t just be a hastily scrawled “Happy Valentines Day!” But that doesn’t mean you should leave that part out entirely!

Choose to either start off your card by wishing your partner a happy Valentines Day and follow it up with your personal message, or get all your feelings out on the page first and finish it off with a “So Happy Valentines Day!”

Follow one or two of these tips (or even all of them!) and you’ll find yourself writing a Valentines Day message that is genuinely personal and specific to your partner and your relationship, that will show just how much you care and make your partner feel extra special.
